Wildlife Board trip to SAMRAC Port Elizabeth

The day started off when 14 members of the wildlife board under the guidance of Miss C. Hawkins (the teacher in charge) left for SAMRAC, a marine conservation facility in Port Elizabeth. When the board arrived at the destination they were taken on a tour and given valuable points on marine life and penguin rescue. During the tour the boys and Miss Hawkins were given the experience of going to the pool and meeting the resident birds and penguins. The tour guide told the boys that there was one very special penguin that survived a shark attack. When it was time for feeding, the boys and Miss Hawkins got the chance to see the penguins and birds getting fed. When the tour was concluded the boys went and spent some time on the beach to have lunch. Unfortunately it is blue bottle season and the boys and Miss Hawkins had to watch every step they took, luckily nobody got stung. A hand must be given to the boys for their Second To None behaviour.

Annual Inter-School Debate Festival

On the 14 March 2015, the 1st  and 2nd Team debaters were invited to attend the Annual Inter-Schools' Debate Festival at Alexander Road High School.

The Muir teams were amongst fifty one other debating teams throughout the Eastern Cape. The 1st Team consisted of Sive Marola, Jude Naude, Aphiwe Zinto and Khanya Sokutu was the reserve. The 2nd Team consisted of Jared Laas, Richard Niemand and Nicholas Else.

As the u14A's kicked off their rugby match against Cillie, both debating teams were already busy with their first debate against Kingswood. The motion was, “This House Believes That (THBT) nuclear energy is the only solution for South Africa.” The Muir College teams opposed the motion, both teams won with Jude Naude and Richard Niemand being chosen as overall best speakers in their debates.

The motion for the second debate was “THBT the speaker in Parliament should not hold any party political affiliation.” In the 1st Team’s debate, Muir proposed and Queens College opposed the motion. In the 2nd Team debate, Muir proposed and Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) opposed the motion. Unfortunately both teams lost their debates.

The festival was a great platform for the debaters to learn more about debating, experience debating against E.P debating teams.

Gr4C with their teacher, Serene Bayman
During the month of February the Muir College Primary school participated in the Adopt a month challenge for the National Blood Bank. Our target was 100 units. Our Primary school with the support of family and friends managed to achieve not only a personal new record but also a school record for the most units in one month since the programs inception. Well done to our primary school on achieving a total of 169 units of blood. Our top achieving class was Gr4C. Skye O'Connor in Gr7C brought in the most donations with a total of 16 units of blood. Congratulations to our Primary school on this excellent achievement.

Last week our Matric students went to the Working World Exhibition at the NMB Stadium. The men of Muir were able to ask questions from some of the universities South Africa has to offer. The whole process will help them make career decisions. Apart from the learning aspect some of our boys were fortunate enough to meet the Mayor of Port Elizabeth, Mr Benson Fihla. We were very proud to receive feedback from other school and stall owners about the Muir Boys manners and discipline.

Special Guests Bert Cook 93 Not Out & Still Going Strong

William Herbert Cook, is one of the oldest Muirites alive. Bert or better known as Bertie by his friends, was born in London on the 4th of April 1921. Bert arrived in South Africa at age 11 after the death of his parents in London, where he stayed with his aunt who had been a nursing sister at the provincial hospital in Port Elizabeth, but later was placed in charge of the nursing home for Dr Braun in Uitenhage.

Bert attended Muir in the Old Redbrick Building in Park Avenue. As you can imagine coming to Muir halfway through Std. 5 made things interesting for Bert, as he had to learn Afrikaans. It was decided that Bert would only start Afrikaans in Std. 6. Mr Myburgh was Bert’s Std. 6 teacher and also a hostel master. Without any shadow of a doubt Mr Myburgh was the finest teacher Bert had ever met. Mr Myburgh tutored Bert for an hour every day, while the other students were in prep. By June Bert was able to write the same Afrikaans exam as the other boys, with the exception that he was able to use a dictionary. Bert then matriculated in 1937 and then began working for Standard Bank in 1938.

Bert will be attending this year's Founders Celebrations with his son Eric. We look forward to catching up with Bert and all other Old Muirites who will be returning to their Alma mater,

Interact - Visiting Rosa Munch

Interact performed their first duty of service for 2015 on Wednesday, 25 February 2015, by delivering cupcakes to Rosa Munch Old Age Home . The cupcakes were frosted with red icing to symbolize the new character transformation theme of CARING at the College. The youth of yesteryear was excited to see all the Interact boys and they enjoyed seeing that the youth still cares.
